Harriet Winifred (Cesander) Price, age 83, of Sacramento died peacefully on August 24, 2011, after a brief struggle with lung cancer.
Her funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Tulare United Church in Tulare, SD.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Tulare Cemetery. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
She was born on October 15, 1927, in West Liberty, Iowa, to Paul Kugler Cesander and Josephine Othelia (Wentzel) Cesander. She attended kindergarten in Iowa City, Iowa, elementary school at Simmons Elementary, and Junior High School in Aberdeen, South Dakota.After high school, she attended Northern State University in Aberdeen and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor's degree in education (major in Speech, minor in English). Based on her high scholastic standing she was a member of the "Order of the Gray Gowns" and as a junior was chosen as an honorary escort for the 1948 Spring and Summer commencements.
She loved to sing and performed in "Las Nortenas" and "The Charmettes" at Northern. Her favorite professor was her father who taught psychology.
She married Harvey Eber Price on June 1, 1947, while at Northern. They lived in a Quonset hut on campus and their first son, Howard Allan, was born on September 18, 1948, at the beginning of their senior year.
After graduation, she and Harvey moved to Modesto, California and began their teaching careers in the fall of 1949. Their second son, Gary Michael, was born on December 10, 1951. She would later teach in Sacramento, California, taking time to give birth to her third son, Mark Timothy on March 29, 1955. In the fall of 1958, the family moved to the North Shore of Lake Tahoe. Harriet taught elementary school at Kings Beach Elementary and Harvey was the principal. Later she would teach at Tahoe City Elementary and Incline Village High School. While at Incline she taught English and debate. She sang in the church choir, often as soloist, and was active in the Women's Republican club. After retiring from teaching in the mid-1970s, she began a second career as a bookkeeper for the North Shore Club.
In 1977, she and Harvey returned to Sacramento, and she continued to work as a bookkeeper for Cal Gas and Perry's Restaurant.She was married to the love of her life, Harvey, for 51 years and 10 months who preceded her in death in April 1999.
She is survived by her sons, Howard (Theresa) of Sacramento, Gary (Rick) of Oakdale, and Mark (Anne) of Rancho Murieta. She was the beloved grandmother of Zachary, Gretchen, and Ian Price (Howard), and William, Lila, Layne, and Connor (Mark). She is also survived by her niece, Deacon Jeannette Manning (husband Larry and family) and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by father and mother, Paul and Josephine Cesander, her sister Eleanor Jenks, and her brother, Paul K. Cesander (wife Eleanor).
