Obituary

Herbert W. "Herb" Blume, 74, of Redfield, SD, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014 near his home due to a one vehicle accident. His funeral will be Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Redfield. Reverend Brian Wasmoen will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery with military rites. Closed casket visitation will be Friday from 2-8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. and the family present starting at 5:30 p.m. www.thelenfuneralhome.com

Herb was born December 31, 1939 in Redfield to Wylie and Helen (Brink) Blume. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Redfield High School in 1958. He served in the National Guard for six years and worked at the South Dakota Experimental Farm. Herb married Sandra Waldner June 25, 1961 in Hitchcock, SD. They farmed east of Redfield, with his father for many years. He later farmed with his son Kenneth, before he took on more of a management position (pickup seat manager).

He was named Outstanding Young Farmer, Northeast Cattleman's Association Cattle Feeder of the year. Herb was a well respected cattleman in the Redfield area. Herb also served on the Lodi Township Board for 40 years.

Herb is survived by his wife Sandra of Redfield; his daughter Connie (Ryon) Bohl of Mellette and their children: Trevor and Tucker; Kenneth (Kellie) Blume of Redfield and their children: Colin, Riley and Elden; Bruce (Nancy) Blume of Redfield and their children: Lydia, Isabel, Ivan and Lilly. He is also survived by his brother Terry (Carlton) Blume of Hot Springs, SD; his sister Lynda (Allen) Wipf of Frankfort, SD, His mother-in-law Velma Waldner, his brother-in-law Ray (Rita) Waldner, nieces and nephews and two aunts: Lucille Nase and Lillian (Gene) Flanders.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
