Obituary

Howard Harmening, 91, of Redfield, SD, died Monday, March 26, 2007 at Golden Living Center in Redfield. His funeral will be Monday, April 2, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Redfield. Pastor Peter M. Utecht will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. Visitation will be Sunday, April 1st from 3-8:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials. www.thelenfuneralhome.com

Howard was born July 11, 1915 in Redfield to Fred and Ella (Kissner) Harmening. He grew up and attended country school in the Crandon area. He farmed with his family before marrying Irma Polak on August 24, 1940 in Crandon. They farmed in the Redfield area until 1976 when they moved into Redfield. Irma died in 1983.

Howard enjoyed his time helping with various chores at Tony's Garage. He also enjoyed playing cards and his life on the farm. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church.

Howard is survived by his four children: Gary Harmening of Sioux Falls, SD, Donna (Wayne) Matheny of Valparaiso, IN, Janice (Bob) Yarchan of Knox, IN, Dennis (Debbie) Harmening of Redfield, SD; five grandchildren: Daron Matheny of Hebron IN, Brad Matheny of Hebron IN, Dawn Sharp of Valparasio IN, Darel Harmening of Terre Haute IN, and Valerie Johns of Chesterton IN and twelve great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters Betty Skinner of Redfield and Cleora (Clark) Binger of Fairbault, MN.

He was preceded in death by his wife Irma, three sisters: Edna Sargent, Clarice Robinson and Bernice Willis and three grandchildren: DeAnn Harmening, Daniel Harmening and Todd Matheny and one great grandson Matthew Matheny.
