James F. "Duke" McFarlane Jr., 87, of Redfield, SD, died Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at Golden Living Center in Redfield.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Plankinton; SD. Msgr. Steve Barnett will celebrate the mass.
Burial will be in Mizpah Cemetery at Plankinton.
Visitation will be Friday from 2-7:00 p.m. with a scriptural wake and rosary service at 5:30 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
James was born December 13, 1926, to James "Doc" and Hazel (Guindon) McFarlane, in Plankinton, SD. He was raised and educated in Plankinton and graduated in 1945. After graduation he served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946. After his honorable discharge he used the GI Bill and enrolled at the University of South Dakota where he earned his degree in economics. In 1978, James married Mavis Lalley at Plankinton. Together they farmed, raised baby calves and hay on a farm near Plankinton. James was a member of the Plankinton American Legion and served as past Post Commander. After James retired in 1982, they moved to Redfield.
James loved to dicker and was known as a "horse trader" as he liked to negotiate prices on everything he purchased. Jim enjoyed studying and following the economic trends. He would often hitch-hike in his younger days to get around.
James is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mavis; a son James III (Maureen) of Minneapolis, many cousins; two nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
