Jeffrey "Jeff" Allen Porter, 49, of Redfield, SD, passed away from complications of heart surgery on Friday, October 9, 2020, at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. He was born December 5, 1970, in Houston, TX, a son of John L. Porter and Sandra J. (Betts) Porter. He was united in marriage on June 1, 2006, in Redfield to Monica Steffen, who survives at their home.
Jeff attended school in San Diego County, CA and Claremont, CA. He enjoyed playing sports, with baseball being his favorite. He loved traveling the United States, visiting family and friends along the way. He would take the scenic routes at every opportunity taking in the beautiful sights of nature. In his younger years, he backpacked his way across the West Coast taking menial jobs. Jeff enjoyed talking and debating politics and religion.
He was employed with the State of South Dakota Developmental Center – Redfield until his health forced him to retire. Jeff was a member of the Redfield Wesleyan Church. He cherished the times spent with his family and will be loved and missed by many.
Jeff is survived by his wife Monica; sons: Christopher A. Porter, Nathaniel L. Porter, Chad Steffen, and Timothy (Amanda) Steffen; one daughter Jessica M. Porter; two grandchildren: Piper and Owen Steffen; mother Sandra Betts Porter; two brothers: Michael Porter and Paul Gaugush; and one sister Tamara Porter. He is also survived by three nephews: Kyle and Tyler Jenkins and Ryan Gaugush; one niece Megan Gaugush; and several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father John L. Porter.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Redfield Wesleyan Church. The service will be live-streamed to Hyke Funeral Home's website. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. Pastor Adrian Timmons will be officiating.
Social distancing and masks are recommended at both the church and funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully prefers memorials to help with medical and funeral expenses. Online donations may be made under the "Donations" tab above.
