Jerald "Jerry" Fuss, 90, of Redfield, SD, died Tuesday, November 11th at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. His funeral will be Saturday, November 15th at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Redfield. Reverend Brian Wasmoen will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. Visitation will be Friday from 1-8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., with Pastor Lorah Houser Jankord officiating, at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
Jerald Justus Fuss was born August 2, 1924 in Miranda, SD to Henry Justus and Marie (VonAhn) Fuss. The family moved to a farm east of Redfield in 1930, where Jerry grew up. He attended Brink Country School and Redfield High School. When he was a junior in high school he was in a horse-wagon accident and underwent leg surgery and spent a year in a full body cast. Jerald married Hermione Luck-Aaker in 1970 in Watertown. Hermione died in 1989, after 18 years of marriage.
Jerald married Shirley Graves-Welk, on May 25, 1990, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where they were both members for many years.
Jerald started work at South Dakota Developmental Center-Redfield following high school. He worked for many years as the head gardener and groundskeeper. He managed the greenhouse where they started many vegetables and all the flowers for many flower beds. Jerry retired in 1987, after 32 years. Jerald also helped on his brother's farm, after work and on weekends. For his vacation he ran the silage cutter for several weeks each fall.
Jerald was very active at the Golden Days Senior Center, holding different offices and helping with events and functions. Jerald loved to attend rummage sales.
Jerald is survived by his wife Shirley, his step daughter Kathryn (Robert) Hartman and four step children: David Aaker, Lynn Aaker, Corrine Cramer and Barbara Aaker. He is also survived by his brother Robert (Francelle) Fuss of Redfield; two sisters: Lorraine VanAlstyne of Rapid City, SD and Mary Ann (Delt) Clark of Wapato, WA; a sister-in-law Carol Fuss of Rapid City; and many nieces and nephews.
Jerald was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Raymond in 2003.
