Joan Barbara Kegler, 83, of Redfield, SD, passed away Friday, December 9, 2016 at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. Her funeral service will be Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Redfield United Methodist Church. Reverend Marty Toepke-Floyd will officiate. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield.

A closed casket visitation will be Friday from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. Arrangements have been entrusted to Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home. (www.thelen-hykefuneralhome.com)

Joan Barbara Kegler was born July 19, 1933 in Aberdeen, SD to Oren and Josie (Vensand) Shantz. She grew up in the Athol area. She graduated from Athol High School and always enjoyed the school reunions and monthly Athol breakfast get togethers. She started working at Community Memorial Hospital with her friend, Yvonne O'Daniel, right after graduation.

She married Willmar J. Kegler on her 19th birthday, July 19, 1952, in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Redfield. They lived on the family farm until moving to Michigan. They returned to Redfield in 1956. They were blessed with six children: David, Barbara, Terry, William, Steven and Susan. Joan enjoyed raising her family as a stay at home Mom and she babysat many children. Joan started working at the hospital again in the late 1960's and remained there until she retired in 2000. Willmar and Joan were three months short of celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary as Willmar passed away on April 14, 2002.

Joan loved playing cards, Bingo, volunteering at the food pantry, going to Leo's to visit with her coffee ladies and especially spending time with her family. She was a member of the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. She will be missed by many friends and especially by her family.

Joan is survived by her children: David (Heidi) Kegler of Spearfish, SD; Barbara Lamb of Janesville, MN; Terry (Janet) Kegler of Redfield; Steven (Alissa) Kegler of Longmont, CO and Susan (Robert) Baird of Chandler, AZ. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; her sister, Nancy (Larry) Johnson of Redfield; two sisters-in-law: Eva Chester of Miami, FL and Caroline Kegler of Athol, SD as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Willmar; her infant son, William and her parents.
