Obituary

Joan Mary (Grohs) Mueller, 86, of Redfield, SD, passed away Friday, February 10, 2023, at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield.  A Scriptural Prayer Service, Time of Sharing, and Rosary will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield, with burial to follow at St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Redfield.  Reverend John Short will officiate.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be live-streamed on the funeral home's website below Joan's obituary.  Hyke Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements ( www.hykefuneralhome.com ).

In lieu of flowers and following Joan's wishes, please direct memorials to St. Bernard Catholic Church or St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery (217 E 6 th Ave. – Redfield, SD – 57469).

Joan was born on July 12, 1936, on the family farm south of Zell, SD, to John and Bertha (Zens) Grohs. She was one of eight children.  Joan attended St. Mary's Convent School in Zell and graduated from Redfield High School in 1954.

On June 4, 1960, Joan married Richard "Dick" Mueller in Redfield and they spent 50 years together before he passed away in 2010.

Joan worked for Marler's Photo Studio and later at First National Bank for seventeen years.  In 1990, she started working part-time at Thelen Funeral Home before officially retiring in 2016.  Joan was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, St. Bernard's Altar Society, sang in the church choir, and helped serve lunch at many funerals.  Crocheting, playing cards, traveling, watching tv, reading the newspaper, and cooking were favorite pastimes.  Joan loved to visit with family and friends and she enjoyed being active in her nieces and nephews' lives.

Grateful for sharing her life are her many nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings:  Ethyl Roeber, Beverly Pritchard, Rolland Grohs, Donald Grohs, Eunice O'Connor, Catherine Dillion, and Mary Socha.
