Obituary

John Joachim Komraus, 83, of Redfield, SD, died Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. His funeral will be 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 2019, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. Reverend Marty Toepke-Floyd will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow at the Rockham Grace Cemetery in Rockham, SD.

Visitation will be prior to the service on Monday, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., with family present beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Hyke Funeral Home.

John Joachim Komraus was born on October 11, 1935, in Avon, MI. John was the youngest of seven children born to William and Dora (Rolisosf) Komraus. John attended school and graduated from Romulus High School in Michigan in 1953.

On May 8, 1958, John was inducted into the United States Army.  He proudly served his country as a Geological Engineer – Terrain Analyst until his honorable discharge on March 14, 1960.

John met Eleanor Iverson, the love of his life, in Detroit, MI and they were married on October 5, 1963. They had one son, Keith Alan, who was born on October 10, 1972. In 1974, they moved to Rockham, SD. John had various jobs throughout his life.  He was a locksmith while living in Detroit. During his years in South Dakota, he was a Nursing Home Administrator in Faulkton, Winner and Spearfish. Around 1991, John went to work as a janitor/handy man at the Redfield Public School. After retiring from the school, John worked in the lawn and garden area at Walmart to keep busy. John had many hobbies. You could always find him working in the garden, collecting coins, building items with his carpentry skills, and baking cookies or making fudge. His pride and joy were his grandkids.

John is survived by his son Keith (Nikki) Komraus of Zell, SD and his grandkids: Hannah, Abbey, and Elliott.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, his wife of 49 years Eleanor, and his grandson Kolby.
