Jon was born August 18, 1982 in Aberdeen, SD to David and Janelle (Jans) Nelson. He grew up on a farm east of Redfield and graduated from Redfield High School in 2001. During high school, Jon was an avid wrestler with Courtney cheering him on through every match. Following High School he attended Lake Area Technical Institute where he graduated in 2003 with a degree in Ag Production. After graduation, Jon moved back to Redfield to help farm with his dad, which has been a passion of his since a young boy; and he also started working for 4-Seasons in Redfield. On April 27, 2006, Jon and Courtney were blessed with their first daughter, Jadie Olivia. On September 9, 2006, Jon married his high school sweetheart and love of his life and continued to build the beautiful family they have today: Tucker David, in 2008; another son, Caleb Dean in 2010; and another daughter, AlleRae Ann in 2012. Jon worked at Redfield Energy for short time and then started working for RDO in 2008.
Jon was an amazing husband, father, son and brother. Jon became a rural firefighter right after high school graduation. He loved camping with his family. Jon was the hardest working guy you've ever met, and he had a heart of gold. His smile would light up a room and he always knew what to say. Jon had the best "one-liners." From a young age he loved to cook, making breakfast in bed for his sisters as a kid and then cooking and baking for Courtney and the kids. He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
While employed at 4-Seasons, Jon was in a work related accident in June 2005. He had his first transplant in February 2006. Jadie was born a few months later in Omaha while Jon was recovering. His first transplant rejected in early 2014 and he had a second transplant in August 2014. He had a third transplant in April 2016.
Jon is survived by his loving wife of nine years, Courtney of Redfield; his children: Jadie, Tucker, Caleb and AlleRae Nelson, all of Redfield; his parents: David Nelson, Redfield; Janelle (Delbert) Fortin, Redfield; his father and mother-in-law: Pat and Sheri Zens, Redfield; his sisters: Amy (Jay) Hermann, Audrey (Jerad) Appel, Katelyn Nelson, Camryn Nelson, all of Redfield; his brother: Barrett Nelson, Redfield; his brother-in law: Ryan (Lisa) Zens, Redfield; his sister-in-laws: Mindy (Josh Hartman) Zens, Mitchell; Megan (Gregory) Rhodes, Zell; his nieces and nephews: Kylie and Kasey Hermann, Connor, Chloe, Jaycee, and Bentley Appel, MonaLisa and Ashley Perez, Madysson, Bryson, Dawson, and Coleson Zens, Kaylie Zens, Jaxson Hartman, Ellie and Addelyn Rhodes; several aunts, uncles and cousins; Courtney's grandparents: Dean and Diann Zens and Irene Jensen.
