Joyce A. Rahm, 79, of Turton, SD died Thursday, March 15, 2007 at Golden Living Center in Groton, SD. Her memorial mass will be Saturday, March 17, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Turton. Father Thomas Vazhappilly will celebrate the mass. Cremains burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There will be no rosary or visitation.
Joyce Ann was born to Henry and Sylvia (LaBrie) Mannie on November 19, 1927. Joyce was the second of eight children. She lived with her parents on a farm where she attended the Mannie School for eight years. She attended Brentford High School for one year and Doland High School for three years graduating in 1946.
On November 19, 1946, Joyce married John K. Rahm, the son of John and Clara (Veatch) Rahm, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Turton, South Dakota. Johnnie and Joyce lived for a time on a farm and then moved into Turton, where they bought a home. In 1981, they purchased the St. Joseph's Rectory, which was built in 1907 by Joyce's maternal great grandmother when she moved her family to town after the death of her husband.
In life Joyce and John were blessed with four children. Nancy, the eldest, married Larry Coats, a Doland High School classmate. Nancy and Larry, who live in Springfield, Virginia, have one daughter, Lori . Lori and her husband Andy Kean have three sons, Andrew, Tristin and Brayden.
Sally, the second daughter is married to Loel Larsen. Sally and Loel, who live in Custer, SD, have three children: Joely, who is married to Josh Lee, and has a daughter Madi; Jon, who is a student at South Dakota School of Mines; and Josh, who is married to Destinee Jones, and has a daughter, Alanis.
Brenda, the third daughter, is married to Albert (Bud) Hansen. Brenda and Bud, who live in Watertown, have two children: a daughter, Holli, and a son Jeff, who is married to Amy Redlin, and has a son, Hunter, and a daughter, Morgan.
Joyce's lone son, Donald (Donnie) is married to Lynnette "Lynnie" Karlsen. Donnie and Lynnie, who live in Turton, have one son, Darrin, and a daughter, Heather. Darrin is married to Laurie Constant, and has three daughters, Brooke, Paige, and Emma. Heather is married to Clint Abbott, and has two boys, Riley and Braden.
At St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Joyce was a member of the Altar Society, and held the offices of President, Vice President and Treasurer. Joyce also was active in the parish, teaching Catechism classes for many years. A life-long member of the Catholic Daughters, Joyce held the offices of Vice Regent and Grand Regent. Joyce sang in the church choir and also was a Sacristan for a number of years.
Joyce loved her community and enjoyed her memberships in the Double V's extension, the VFW Auxiliary of the Miles-Davis-Fortin Post, where she also held many different offices. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Conde and a Leader of the Local 4-H Club.
Working outside of her home, Joyce did house cleaning with Alice Imm. She worked at the Brentford Farmers Bar and CafAC., at the Remily's Store in Turton, and under several owners, at the Corner CafAC.. She worked for Pat Frances and Jim Becker at the Country Corner, and for many years was a correspondent for the Times-Record newspaper. In 1986, with Leola Rahm and Ann Beauvais, Joyce started the Turton Rummage House with what was to have been a one-day sale, but due to a windy day was moved into the old telephone office on the north side of the street. The "rummage sale" was so popular that it was continued as a fund raising venture for the Catholic Church.
In her spare time, Joyce loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; embroidering; reading; and baking.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Johnnie; her children: Donnie (Lynnie) Rahm, Nancy (Larry) Coats, Sally (Loel) Larsen and Brenda (Bud) Hansen; her eight grandchildren; her twelve great grandchildren; four sisters: Elaine Lehna, Marlyce Flint, Carol (Maurice) LaBrie, Patti Gray and three brothers: Marvin (Ruth), Jerry (Geri) and Jimmie (Karen).
She was preceded in death by her parents.
