Laurel E. Winjum, 87, Redfield, SD, died Sunday, May 13, 2012 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD.

Her funeral will be Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Redfield. Reverend Stephen Perry will officiate. After a time for lunch and fellowship, at the church, burial will be in Frederick, SD at 4:00 p.m.

Laurel Winjum was born May 4, 1925 to Lauris and Rena (Baldwin) Winjum at Frederick, South Dakota. She graduated from Frederick High School before attending Northern State University and University of South Dakota. She taught business classes at Redfield High School from 1948 until 1956 while working part time at the Redfield Hospital. She developed a keen interest in lab and x-ray science and returned to Northern State to obtain a degree in lab science and obtain her ASCP certification. She served as Administrator of the Community Memorial Hospital for several years until 1989 when she retired. She wintered in Mission, TX for several years.

In her youth Laurel enjoyed playing softball. She was an avid tennis player and golfer. She looked forward each fall to pheasant hunting and was an excellent marksman.

Laurel was a devoted member of the Redfield United Methodist Church where she was active in United Methodist Women and sang in the choir and was a member of the Bell Choir. She received the United Methodist Mission Recognition Award for her years of dedicated service to her church. Laurel was a member of Literary Guild, Chapter S PEO and Redfield Chapter #19, OES.

She is survived by one brother William Winjum of Bonners Ferry, ID; a niece and nephew and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
