Obituary

Leo R. Vaughn, 77, of Redfield, SD, died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at his home in Redfield. His funeral will be Friday, May 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Redfield. Reverend Stephen Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. www.thelenfuneralhome.com

Leo was born March 23, 1933 in Tripp County, SD to Dallas and Dorothy (Bennett) Vaughn. He grew up and attended school in Gregory County. Leo grew up breaking and riding horses and worked for area farmers for a few years before entering the United States Army. He served during the Korean War from 1953-1956, and served overseas for fourteen months before his discharge. Leo married Melva Smith June 21, 1958 in Gregory. He started working in the newspaper business as a printer, in 1957, in Gregory, before moving to Redfield in 1962. Leo worked at the Redfield Press until he retired in 1998. He worked as a custodian at the United Methodist Church for several years after his retirement.

Leo enjoyed fishing and hunting in his early years. He also worked as a substitute crossing guard, volunteered delivering meals on wheels and was a volunteer fireman for twenty-nine years.

Leo is survived by his wife Melva of Redfield; two sons: Steven (Jill) Vaughn of Dallas, TX and their children Mercedes and Jack; and Kevin (Patty) Vaughn of Warner, SD and their children Tina and Megan. He is also survived by his sister Belle Ravellette of Philip, SD; and his brothers: Don (Lue) Vaughn of Colome, SD; Derald (Jo) Vaughn of Burke, SD; Lloyd (Sally) Vaughn of Mitchell, SD; Jim (Judy) Vaughn of Golden, CO; Jerry (Bev) Vaughn of Burke, SD; Dennis (Cindy) Vaughn of Dallas, SD and Randy Vaughn of Newell, SD. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Fred Fode of Arizona and his sister-in-law Claudia Vaughn of Mitchell, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, his sister Lois and two brothers: Billy and Merle.
