Lila was born February 17, 1929 to Heber and Anna (Collins) Hammond on a farm near Columbia, SD. She said her mother told her that the doctor that delivered her had to travel to the farm in a horse drawn sleigh due to the snow blocking the roads that winter. Lila attended grammar school in Columbia. Her family then moved to Redfield and she went on to graduate from Redfield High School. Lila married Harry Bill Betten in Redfield on November 13, 1949. They later divorced. While living in Redfield, she was employed at Spink Electric Co-operative for over 30 years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ and served as church secretary for several years. Lila enjoyed bowling, golfing, deer and pheasant hunting during the time she lived in Redfield. After retiring, she moved to Rapid City, SD in 1983. During her retirement, she volunteered in the archives area at Mount Rushmore. It was a major highlight for her when she was afforded the opportunity to hike up and view the unfinished Hall of Records atop the monument that is closed to the general public. Lila took great pleasure in showing company the sites of the Black Hills, traveling and especially visiting her family, which she loved very much. She enjoyed singing, music in general and was exceptionally good at working crossword puzzles and word scrambles. She moved to the Redfield Eastern Star Home in January 2014. Her good-natured kidding and wit will be missed by many.

Lila is survived by her daughter Lisa and son-in-law Eric Flint, Rapid City, SD. Granddaughters and great grandchildren, Erin (Anthony) Talburt, Emelia and Weston, Denver, CO and Britney Flint, Hope and Jordan, Salt Lake City, UT and Jerrick Manigault, Charleston, SC, along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Rex Hammond and three sisters, Loree Hanson, Geraldine (Jerry) Beard and Mavis Hammond, her baby sister who died at birth.
