February 2, 1935 – June 7, 2017
Luella Shafer, loving wife, mother, grand-mother, and great grandmother, 82, of Hartford, SD, died Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
Born on February 2, 1935, in Hosmer, SD to George and Emilia Wiederich, Luella attended country school near Hosmer and began working for St. Luke's as a certified nursing assistant when she was a teenager following her family's move to Aberdeen, SD. She married Harold Shafer on September 4, 1953, in Leola, SD and moved to their farm in Long Lake, SD to raise their four children.
Luella and Harold later moved to Ashley, ND where Luella worked as a certified nursing assistant. In 1993, they moved to Redfield, SD and Luella became an active member of the community. She worked as a certified nursing assistant at the Redfield Assisted Living, helped at a local daycare center, and started the Quilting Bee at the Redfield Methodist Church. Luella was also an active member of the ALCW, Square Dance Camping Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She greatly enjoyed quilting, square dancing, sewing, ceramics, scrapbooking, embroidery, and bragging about her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Luella will be remembered by all her family members for her dedication to make each person a quilt for special occasions.
Luella leaves her beloved husband Harold; her son Harley Shafer and his wife Tammy of Sioux Falls, SD; her son Harvey Shafer of Crooks, SD; her daughter Joy Powers and her husband Vincent of Hartford, SD; and her daughter Donna Davey of Newcastle, NE. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her two brothers – Leo and Elmer Wiederich; her sister Claudia Hasting; and her great grandchild Paxton Shafer.
A service celebrating Luella's life will be held at Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home (www.thelen-hykefuneralhome.com) in Redfield on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. Visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m. with the funeral service to follow at 11:30 a.m. A remembrance ceremony will then occur at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Aberdeen before Luella is laid to rest.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Avera Dialysis in Sioux Falls.
