Lyle "Dean" Waddington, 101, of Redfield, SD, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Redfield. Reverend Tammy Toepke-Floyd will officiate. Burial, with full military rites, will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., with family present, at Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. A Masonic Rites ceremony will follow at 6:00 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home. (www.thelen-hykefuneralhome.com)

Lyle "Dean" Waddington was born in Redfield on October 27, 1915 to John and Pearl (Tyrrell) Waddington. He attended school in Redfield. He was employed as a carpenter before entering the U.S. Army before World War II on March 10, 1941 in the field artillery. He was a prisoner of war for 15 months during 1943 – 1944 before being honorably discharged in 1945.

He married Faye Wilbur on August 23, 1944 in Redfield. Dean and Faye returned to Redfield to make their home. He was employed at the Tuthill Lumber Co. in Redfield from 1946 – 1954 and was the operation manager for four years.

Sheriff Curtis Buss hired Dean as Deputy Sheriff in 1957. He was Deputy for 12 years and Sheriff for four years. He retired in 1973 and was a substitute rural mail carrier for 16 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and playing horseshoes. Gardening was a large part of his spring and summer days. He enjoyed company, especially at Cottonwood Lake where they moved after retirement.

Dean was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, a member of the South Dakota Police Officers Association, D.A.V. of Sioux Falls, SD, American Prisoner of War, Odd Fellows, Rebekah's, Mason's and Senior Citizens.

Dean is survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye; five brothers and four sisters.

Family will be present during the visitation and Masonic Rites ceremony to accept condolences.
