Obituary

Martha Barbara (Schmidt) Oberle Dickey, 93, of Mellette, SD, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2020, at Prairie Heights Healthcare Center in Aberdeen, SD.  Her funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16, 2020, at the Northwestern United Methodist Church in Mellette.  Pastor Jon Damaska will officiate.  Interment will be at a later date in the Mellette Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., at the church.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield, SD.  (www.hykefuneralhome.com)

Martha Barbara Schmidt was born December 31, 1926, to Wilhelm and Frieda (Becker) Schmidt near Draper, SD.  She attended country school near Draper and then attended school in Murdo, SD before graduating from Pierre High School in Pierre, SD in 1945.

On June 5, 1948, Martha married John Oberle in Aberdeen, SD and they resided in Mellette, SD.  John and Martha went on their honeymoon from Mellette to Texas on a motorcycle.  They had one son, Johnny Tex Oberle, born on March 23, 1949, and who passed away in an accident on January 21, 1971.

On January 18, 1972, Martha married Howard Dickey in Aberdeen.  They enjoyed entertaining friends, especially with turtle feeds.

Martha was a rural mail carrier and spent numerous years as the Coordinator of the Mellette Senior Center.  She enjoyed bowling, working in her flower gardens, doing word puzzles, and reading the daily paper.  Martha also enjoyed spending time in Cresbard, SD, and Florida with her niece Wanda (Darwin) Holt and family.  She will be remembered for her delicious sour cream raisin bars.  She was a proud member of the Northwestern Methodist Church in Mellette and a lifetime member of the Mellette Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her sister Bertha Hardwick of Spokane, WA; sisters-in-law: Helen Oberle of Mellette and Lois Schmidt of Pierre, SD; brother-in-law Frank "Ike" (Eva) Oberle of Mellette; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her husbands: John Oberle and Howard Dickey; son: Johnny Tex Oberle; brothers: Paul, Ervin, Lincoln, Benjamin "Benny", Arthur, Rueben, and Robert; sister Eleanora Robbins; and sister-in-law Frances Perry.
