Marvin L. Becker, 88, of Redfield, SD, and formerly of Rockham, SD, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at the Golden Living Center in Redfield. His funeral will be Friday, April 3, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Rockham. Reverend Julie Nygaard will officiate. Burial will be in the Rockham Cemetery with full military rites performed by John J. Tomson American Legion Post #57. Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6-8:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
Marvin was born July 13, 1920 to John and Frieda (Hardie) Becker in Hand County. He attended Linn Township County School near Rockham. Marvin served in the United States Army from 1942-1945. During WWII, Marvin served with Company B 51st Engineer Combat Battalion that received a unit citation for outstanding performance in action against the enemy from December 17 to 22, 1944. Marvin married Marion Davis on July 26, 1949. Marvin worked as a mechanic, starting his career at working at Rockham Motor, then he worked at Titus Implement and Chipmans in Miller. In 1965, he returned to Rockham and purchased Rockham Motor and operated the business until he retired in the early 1990's.
Marvin was a life member of the John J. Tomson American Legion Post #57 in Rockham.
Marvin is survived his children: Cal (Joni) Becker of Monroe, NE; Larry Becker of Rockham, SD; Michael (Deb) Becker of Groton, SD; Barbara (Eros) Williams and Valerie (Darrel) Bleeker both of Sioux Falls, SD; fifteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers: Marlin (Lucy) Becker of Redfield and Lester (Verna) Becker of St. Lawrence, SD and two sisters: Irene (Robert) Schmidt of Rockham and Elvina (Roger) Engle of New Hope, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marion, one brother Milton, two sisters: Lucillia Abby and Evelyn Becker, one grandson Larry Becker, Jr. and one great grandchild Briana Becker.
