Mary Anastasia Hurst, 79, of Redfield, SD died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, November 17, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield. Father William Osborn and Father Christopher Hughes will celebrate the mass. A time for fellowship and lunch will follow the mass at the church hall in Redfield. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
Mary was born August 7, 1929 in Frankfort, SD to Lorraine and Mayme (Eimers) Robinson. She was the eldest of six sisters and three brothers. They grew up one mile north of Frankfort. She attended school in Frankfort, graduating in 1947. After graduation she worked at the Frankfort Red Owl Store. On January 20, 1953, Mary and Charles Hurst were united in marriage. They lived on the farm, where Mary was born, and farmed with her father for one year. Mary and Charles made their home near Gary, Turton, Hitchcock, Tulare and ending back at Frankfort until retirement. Mary did a lot of house cleaning jobs and worked at Wilson Motel for several years. She also was a news reporter for the Doland Times and Redfield Press for thirty-five years, retiring in 2004.
Mary was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and Altar Society, Harmony Social Club, American Cancer Society and Happy Hour Club being in charge of Monday dinners at the Community Center. She also helped get the Frankfort Alumni Reunion started. She held offices in Catholic Daughters and was a Regent for two terms.
Mary was an avid Frankfort Softball fan, watching many family members and friends play. She also enjoyed watching school sports and events where all her grandchildren participated, making bismarcks and making Sequin calendars.
Mary is survived by two sons: Jim and Joe Hurst of Frankfort, three daughters: Kathi (David) Swanson of Frankfort, Kris (Joe) Barrie of Turton and Karol (Bob) Artz of Ashton, and eleven grandchildren: Natasha (Scott Feller) Swanson, Matthew Hurst, Amanda (Dominic) Evans, Teresa Barrie, Meghan (Darren Mosel) Hurst, Andrew Swanson, Samantha (Cole O'Daniel) Swanson, Klysta Barrie, Morghan Hurst, Anthony Swanson and Tyler Artz. She is also survived by six sisters: Lucille Liebig of Redfield, Bea (Bill) Hixon of Frankfort, Jo (Dick) Harris of Chamberlain, Flo Hinker of Belle Fourche, Denise (Daryl) Taylor of Cummings, IA and Sharon (Sheldon) Osborn of Redfield and three brothers: Steve (Clairice) Robinson and Lawrence Robinson both of Frankfort and Syl Robinson of Blair, NE and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 2007, her parents and one brother-in-law Joe Hinker.
