Upon graduating, Mavis attended Stewart's School of Cosmetology in Aberdeen. She worked in a salon there until she met the love of her life, Harold Ost, after their pastor introduced them to each other.
Harold and Mavis were married on January 8th, 1966 at Melgard Baptist Church in Aberdeen. Mavis then moved to the Ost farm located southwest of Tulare, SD. To this union, two children, Kim and Kyle, were born. Mavis wore many hats. She was a loving mother and grandmother, the caretaker for her son, and a devoted farmer's wife.

She was a great cook, enjoyed playing card and board games, and took trips to Iowa to spend time with her grandchildren. One of Mavis' fondest memories was travelling to Florida with her daughter's family to see the ocean for the first time.
Mavis is survived by her husband, Harold; her daughter, Kim (Tyler) Thoen of Ames, Iowa; her grandchildren, Justin, Taylor, Olivia, Natalie, and Jordan; and her siblings, Evelyn Schaunaman, Ruth (Marlin) Nihart, Everett (Nancy) Smith, and Robert (Carol) Smith.
