Nellie was born March 26, 1914, southwest of Redfield, to Simon and Bertha (Ecker) Appel. She was the oldest of ten children and attended a country school near Cottonwood Lake. As the oldest child, she helped her dad in the fields, driving horses, planting and harvesting crops and haying. She worked for different people cleaning houses, washing clothes and ironing. Nellie married John Lutter October 20, 1936. They farmed and ranched south of Zell all their married life. They milked Brown Swiss and Holstein cows. Nellie raised geese, turkeys, ducks and chickens and sold the eggs, milk and poultry to many area families.

Nellie and John had pheasant hunters for many years. She cooked them three meals a day and gave them a place to sleep. John and Nellie showed Draft horses throughout the state. She also worked at Redfield Livestock Auction, that her son Gilbert owned, cooking and waiting tables in the café.

Nellie loved to cook and her family loved her homemade raisin bread, sauerkraut, Kanadle and popcorn balls.

Nellie is survived by her children; Gilbert (Zelda) Lutter of Redfield and Norma (Lloyd) Gange of Colstrip, MT; 7 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: Roger (Barb) Appel of Redfield; Lucille Brindley of Redfield; and Maxine (Cletus) Stemper of Zell.

She was preceded in death by her husband John in 2004, 2 brothers, 4 sisters, one grandson and two great grandchildren.
