Phyllis was born Phyllis Jean Vollmer on September 13, 1937, in Aberdeen, SD, to Louis and Mary Vollmer of Brentford, SD. Phyllis was the 5th of six children. Daily, she spent many hours playing and caring for her many cats while growing up. She went to several outings at various church related camps while growing up. She also loved horses on the farm in Brentford. She graduated from the public school in Brentford.

She met Fordyce "Bud" Yada Jr., and they were married on December 18, 1955. They moved to a farm in Rockham, SD, where they started a family in February of 1957. Soon after, they also started their dairy farm, that took care of most of their time. She also worked part-time for Gilbert and Zelda Lutter at Redfield Livestock Auction. They sold their farm in 1978 and moved to Colorado where they enjoyed driving in the Rocky Mountains, watching deer and elk. Bud passed from cancer in 1990. Eventually, she remarried to Don Hardie of Redfield, SD. Phyllis lived in Redfield until moving into assisted living and a nursing home in Watertown, SD.

Phyllis enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, especially if it involved fishing and boating.

Phyllis is survived by her 4 children, Bryan (Velma) of Watertown, SD, Lauren (Kim) of Chadron, NE, Lee (Tess) of Zell, SD, and Paul (Jean) of Burley, ID; 17 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother William Vollmer of Mellette, SD and many nieces and nephews.
