Richard "Bud" Armond LaBrie was born October 29, 1929 in Turton to Joseph and Mary (Hansen) LaBrie, the youngest of three children. He attended Turton School and worked on the family farm. In September of 1952, he was drafted into the army and served as a radio operator in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in August 1954. He returned home to work with his dad on the family farm.
Bud met the love of his life, Doris June Henrichsen, in Crocker, SD at a baseball game. They were introduced by her brother Therlo. Bud and Doris married on December 1, 1960 in Turton and made their family home on a farm a few miles southwest of Turton. They raised five daughters and two sons on the farm, retired in 1994 and then moved to Doland.
Known for picking off runners at first base and playing shortstop, Bud played baseball and softball well into his 50's. He was an athlete; playing baseball, softball, ice skating, and playing basketball with his kids. He was an avid Twins fan, hardly missing a game. He was in a bowling league. He safely drove many of the students to school and sporting events for Doland School for 29 years. "Budweiser Base; 2 miles out" is the warning his children often heard on the CB radio in the morning to ensure they were waiting for him to pick them up on the school bus.
Family was a priority in his life. He cared for his mother following the death of his father and never missed a chance to spend time with his kids, even in the tractor. Bud did not miss many events if one of his kids was playing: basketball, football, track, gymnastics, volleyball, softball and baseball; and loved to watch his grandkids every chance he got.
Bud will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Doris of Doland; his children: Jodi (Noel) Gabriel of Whitewood; Julie (Kerwin) Hoellein of Mansfield; Rick (Debbie) LaBrie of Pierre; Kristi (Steve) Stein of Volga; Kathy (Dale) Taylor of Kimball; Terri (Donnie Coble) LaBrie of Sturgis; and Mike (Mollie) LaBrie of Turton. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren: Kayla (Seth), Kelli (Tyler), Derek, Mitchell (Michele), Desha, Micah, Amber (Sam), Jordan (Maari), Jamison, Alex, Andrea (Ryan), Jesse, Josh, Jennifer, Jessica, Logan, and Kaylie and 12 great-grandchildren: Elle, Emeree, James, Keller, Kirby, Matti, Baylor, Noah, Peyton, Riley, Leo and Hudson. Also surviving Bud is one sister, Lila Hansen of Turton and many nieces and nephews.
