Richard "Doc" William Baus, 86, of Redfield, SD, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield. Reverend Tom Anderson will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Redfield.
Visitation will be Monday, from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m., at the Eastern Star Chapel. Visitation will continue from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. A prayer service and rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m. Family will be present starting at 6:00 p.m. to accept condolences. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home (www.hykefuneralhome.com).
Richard "Doc" William Baus was born November 16, 1932, at home in Potter County, SD to William and Gertrude (Flock) Baus. He was educated at the Hoven School in Hoven, SD before attending South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD for two years. His education continued at the University of Minnesota where he graduated in May 1956 with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.
On June 11, 1955, Richard married Carole Schmidt at St. Rose of Lima church in St. Paul, MN. They resided in various towns in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota before settling in Redfield in 1969. Doc worked many years as a Veterinarian in South Dakota and later founded Animal Health Center in Redfield. He enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, writing Christmas poems, reading, crossword puzzles, and playing cards. Doc's most meaningful passion was helping those fighting addictions. He never hesitated to make a 12-step call anywhere in the Midwest.
He made family gatherings a priority filled with laughter, friendly competition, and excitement. Doc was a family man whose family will treasure the kind and compassionate man he was. He will be remembered forever.
Grateful for having shared his life are: his wife of nearly 64 years, Carole of Redfield; and his children: Mark Baus of Bridgewater, CT; Tom (Cindy) Baus of Glen Ellyn, IL; Brian Baus of Pierre, SD; Laurie (Steve) Gabriel of Redfield; and William (Barb) Baus of Redfield. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Philip Baus; Tori, Alex and Zain Baus; Tom, Nicole, EmmaJo and Nathan Farmen; Renae, Curtis, Gibson and Lincoln Brooks; Tony and Jamie Farmen; Brittany, Jackson and Zoey Halverson (and fiancé Jason Their); Ericka, DJ, and Dexten Doxsee; Alex and Bryn Farmen; Oliver Farmen; Brandon, Alysha, Addison and Brody Baus; Andrew Baus; and Kara and Kyle Woodward; one great-great-grandchild, Maelynn; and special daughter-in-law Karla Baus of Pierre.
He was preceded in death by his grandson Nathon Baus; and siblings: Herman Baus, Lena Hoven, Elizabeth Baus, Eleanor Karst, Margaret Baus, Raymond Baus, Robert Baus, Mary Bitzer, and Beatrice Comeau.
