Russell Allen Simon, 73, of Redfield, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2026, at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield, surrounded by his family.
Born in Kansas, Russ spent his childhood moving with his family before eventually settling in Rockham, South Dakota. He later made Redfield his home, a community he would proudly call his own. He attended Redfield High School before continuing his education at Mitchell Area Vocational Technical School, where he earned a degree in Agricultural Marketing and Management.
Following graduation, Russ began his career with the Farm Service Agency in Redfield, where he dedicated more than 30 years to serving the agricultural community. Through his knowledge, strong work ethic, and commitment to helping others, he earned the respect of countless farmers, colleagues, and friends throughout the area.
Outside of work, Russ enjoyed staying active and connected with his community. He played in local baseball leagues and spent many years bowling, a passion that even took him to a tournament in Reno, Nevada, where he had the opportunity to connect with family. He also enjoyed fishing and participating in fishing tournaments. Russ loved the outdoors, especially hunting. One of his favorite traditions was welcoming hunters to his land each year and enjoying the friendships and camaraderie that came with it.
Those who knew Russ will remember his kind heart, unwavering loyalty, and determined, sometimes stubborn, spirit. He valued friendships and simple pleasures, including his daily "beer-thirty" gatherings at Starters, where stories were shared, friendships were strengthened, and laughter was never in short supply.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy (Kippel) and Lynn Brueggemann and Robert Simon; and his brothers, Mitchell and Terry.
He is survived by his daughter, Tiffany Simon of Minneapolis, Minnesota; his grandson, Dejaun Hampton of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and his siblings, Kevin Simon, Jackie Whitney, David Simon, and Joniece Frasca, all of Reno, Nevada. He is also survived by many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Russ will be remembered for his dedication to family, his years of service to the agricultural community, his love of the outdoors, and the many friendships he formed along the way. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, loyalty, and memories that will be cherished by all who knew him. Following his wishes, family will celebrate his life at a later date.
