Ruth Louise Archer (lovingly known as Ruthie to many) was born in Luther Hospital at Watertown, SD to Harry Thompson Archer and Ruby Cleveland Archer. She grew up on a farm 2 miles south and ½ mile west of South Shore, SD. She attended school in South Shore. While in high school, Ruthie was in chorus, small music groups, band, and cheerleading. Ruthie attended college at Dakota State (General Beadle Teacher's College) for two years where she participated in band, chorus, and was a cheerleader for basketball, wrestling, and football. She then attended Northern State University where she received Bachelor of Science Degrees in Elementary and Special Education.
Ruthie's first teaching job was in the first grade classroom in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. After two years of teaching there, she married the love of her life, Lonnie Scriver in South Shore on December 7th, 1962. Since the second grade, Lonnie knew he would marry her after spotting her at a Halloween party dressed as a black cat. Lonnie went home and told his dad he was going to marry that cat someday. They moved to Redfield where they both secured teaching jobs. Ruth taught fourth grade until the birth of her twin sons. She then became a stay at home Mom raising her four sons. She shared many stories of having 4 boys under the age of 3 in diapers all at once while Lonnie spent many evenings away coaching various teams. She was extremely proud of him and the success of his teams over the years.
Later, she started the Literary Guild Pre-School at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Redfield. She returned to teaching at Redfield Public School in 1970 spending most of her career teaching first grade. After retiring in 2003, Ruth took a special education position in Hitchcock/Tulare where she taught for seven years.
She continued her love of teaching by substituting in the Redfield School system. Ruth also administered academic tests to students in Redfield Public School and the George Mickelson School.
Ruth's dedication and love of teaching over the years was nothing short of amazing. She poured her heart and soul into each and every student that she taught and cared for them with respect and love. She was always a hard worker and always went the extra mile for any student or fellow teacher that needed her. Many of Ruth's students have later returned to thank her for her devotion to their education and to also tell her she was the prettiest teacher they ever had!
Ruth's greatest loves were teaching and her family and she also had a passion for sports. She was very proud of her husband's coaching career as well as her children's and grandchildren's success in different sports and loved following them to almost every event they had. Ruthie also loved spending time with friends and family at their lake cabin at Enemy Swim near Waubay, SD. She loved sitting in the sun, riding on their pontoon and just enjoying the outdoors.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 54 years, Lonnie, of Redfield, SD; her children, Robbie and his son Axel of Minneapolis, MN, Lynn (Tonya) Scriver and their sons Ryan and Eric of Albertville, MN, Lee (Terri) Scriver and their daughters Sarah and Summer of Minnetonka, MN, Jan (Amber) Scriver and their daughters Alexandra and Hannah of Milbank, SD.
She is also survived by her siblings, Joann Dane of Miles City, MT, Martin (Marlene) Archer of Hollywood, FL, Jack (Julaine) Archer of Detroit Lakes, MN. Ruth is also survived by her sister-in-law Marian (Cliff) Anderson Butterfield, MN, sister-in-law Janelle Johnson, brother-in-law Ryan (Beverly) Scriver all of Watertown.
