Obituary

Shari Lu (McMahan) Harr, 64, of Zell, SD, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, September 4, 2025, following a nearly two-year battle with Glioblastoma.

Following Shari's wish, she has been cremated and services will take place on Saturday, September 27. Her funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Redfield, SD, with Reverend Keith C. Kraft officiating.  A private family burial will follow the service. Refreshments will be served in the church hall after the funeral service.  The celebration of Shari's life will continue with food and fellowship at Chrystal's in Redfield.  The funeral service will be live-streamed through a link on the funeral home's website below Shari's obituary.  Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield has been entrusted with arrangements (www.hykefuneralhome.com).

Shari was born in Redfield, SD on December 6, 1960, to Willard "Doc" and Nancy (Johnson) McMahan.  Growing up, she loved helping her dad in his veterinary practice and spending time with her family, including swimming at Pickerel Lake and Cottonwood Lake in the summer.  Shari was a beloved member of Redfield High School's Class of 1979 and remained close friends with many of them throughout her life.

Following high school, she attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD before returning home to Redfield and marrying Clyde Harr, on September 2, 1983.  One of Shari's greatest joys in life was raising their four children on the family farm and eventually getting to be a grandma. She was a kid magnet, whether it was her own children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, library school students or more recently her Sunday school students.  She had a way of making every child feel heard and special with her never ending kindness, love and patience and could make the simplest things feel like such an adventure.

As her kids grew older, Shari also worked in the Redfield community at Siegling's Super Valu and then at the now First Interstate Bank for over 20 years.  No matter what role she served in, a friendly face at the grocery store or bank, library or Sunday school teacher, Lions Club or VFW Ladies Auxiliary member, friend or anything else, she gave it her all and was passionate about giving back to the community and the people in it in any way she could.

Shari loved life and found joy in the simple things, especially spending time with her husband, kids, grandkids and extended family, being on the family farm, gardening, playing board games or puzzles, doing crosswords and watching Jeopardy like her dad, spending time with friends, going to Cottonwood Lake in the summer, lending a helping hand to anyone in need, and caring for her animals on the farm (including acting as the de facto Humane Society for the greater Redfield area, much to Clyde's chagrin).  She also loved traveling the world and going on adventures with Clyde and their kids.

After receiving her diagnosis in October 2023, Shari maintained this same zest and enthusiasm for life by making the most of the time she had left.  She and Clyde loved tending to their garden in the summer of 2024 and spending time on the farm.  She also loved the extra time she had with her girls and their families while she was in Sioux Falls for treatment, including countless family dinners, pedicures, and both movies and chats with Owen.  She got to meet her granddaughter, Nami, and make memories with both Nami and Niko when Joe and his family came back for long visits both in Sioux Falls and on the farm.  She also enjoyed spending time with John when he visited in person or on their daily phone calls and had the chance to visit him in Portland last fall.

Shari and Clyde were also good sports as Liz planned bucket list adventures to Scottsdale, Ireland and Grand Cayman.  She had the time of her life on these adventures, including snorkeling, kissing stingrays, soaking up the sun, drinking Guinness and listening to live music at the pub, enjoying the beautiful Irish countryside, and reminiscing with friends in Arizona.  Throughout the past two years, she also made many new memories with friends and extended family.   One of the more special moments of her entire battle was attending Emily and Kody's wedding in May.  Emily may have been the bride, but Shari was the Belle of the ball as she was surrounded by so many special people in her life that day.

Shari fought incredibly hard and with such grace and steadfast determination and was an amazing example for all of us.  We will be forever grateful for the bonus memories that were made and appreciative of the medical and hospice teams at Avera that were in her corner along the way.  To know Shari was to love her and to say she will be deeply missed by her family and friends feels like such an understatement.

Those grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Clyde Harr; four children, Elizabeth "Liz" (Craig) Krogstad, John Harr, Joseph (Mizuho Sasaki) Harr, and Emily (Kody) Everson; three grandchildren, Owen Krogstad, Niko Harr, and Nami Harr; six siblings, James (Elena) McMahan, Didi (Bill) Blagg, Carol Leinen, David (Bev) McMahan, Kathi (Bryon) Anderson, and Gary (Teresa) McMahan; sisters in law, Linda Meik and Susan Holmlund; brothers in law, Kevin (Kaye) Harr and Charles (Karen) Harr; aunt, Nancy Johnson; cousins; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends.

Shari was preceded in death by her parents, her mother and father in law, multiple aunts and uncles, and her brother in law, Tom Leinen.
