Shirley Jane Cringan was the only child born to Ervene Smith and Jane (Cringan) Smith in Camden, MO on November 24, 1932. With both of her parents being deaf, Shirley learned to communicate with her hands before she learned to talk. They moved to Redfield when she was eight months old. In her teen years, Shirley worked at the movie theatre in Redfield. Shirley graduated from Redfield High School in 1951. Upon graduating, she married Lyle Michels and moved to Bell, CA. There they had two children Sandy and Rick. In 1954, they moved to the Michels Homestead in Rockham, SD. There they had two more children, Patti and Cherie. She loved life on the farm. There are many great memories of family and friends gathering for special holidays and neighbors visiting. In 1971, she moved with her children to Faulkton and was employed at the Faulk County Memorial Hospital. In 1973, Shirley moved to Edina, MN where she was employed with Control Data Corporation. In 1977, she moved to Kansas City, MO and was employed with the Kansas City Association for the Blind and Deaf. In 1980, she moved to Murfreesboro, TN and was employed with Cutters Exchange/Singer Company. Shirley married Woody Woodham on February 14, 1986. They had a boutique business selling clothing and accessories in an indoor flea market on weekends. Woody passed away in 1995 of melanoma cancer. After his death, she retired and moved to San Diego, CA to live with her daughter Patti and Patti's late husband, Jim, to be a granny nanny for her granddaughter Jessica. She spent six months in Phoenix, AZ with her great friend Inez Kukrall and one year in Belle Fourche, SD where her son Rick and his family enjoyed spending time with her. In 1998, she moved back to Redfield where her daughter Cherie and family lived. She was happiest back home with her family, and longtime Rockham and Redfield friends. In Redfield, she was the go to gal for any computer needs. Because of her amazing baking and cooking skills, she then published her own cookbook in 2001 called Grandma Shirley's Favorite Recipes. While in Redfield, she was a member of the Redfield Methodist Church. Shirley's friends would pick her up to attend church and they would find their place in the Rockham section. In 2011 she moved to the Meadows Assisted Living in Faulkton, where Sandy and her family then cherished the time they had with her. She brought music, games, baked cookies for the cookie jar, Saturday movie day, and fun and laughter for all of her friends at the Assisted Living. In the last month of her life, she was moved to the Faulkton Healthcare Center where she also touched many hearts.

Those who are left with grateful hearts are her daughter Sandy (Doug) Deiter of Faulkton; her son Rick (Ruth) Michels of Belle Fourche, SD; her daughter Patti (late Jim) Yennie of Sioux Falls; and her daughter Cherie (Bill) Buss of Redfield.
