Stanley K. Baird, 81, of Redfield, SD and formerly of Frankfort, SD died Monday, February 9, 2009 at Golden Living Center in Redfield. His funeral will be Friday, February 13, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Frankfort. Reverend Grace Rhodes will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Frankfort, with military rites. Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
Stanley Kent Baird was born July 23, 1927 in Frankfort to Paul and Alice (Carstensen) Baird. He grew up in Frankfort and graduated from Frankfort High School in 1945. Stanley served in the United States Army, in the Philippines, from 1945-1947. He married Shirley Van Houten on March 14, 1947. They farmed south of Frankfort until he retired in 2005. Shirley died in 1968. Stanley was the US Postmaster in Frankfort from 1964-1989. He married Jean Stanley on October 6, 1979. They lived near Frankfort until Jean died in 1986. Stanley continued living on the farm before moving to the Golden Living Center.
Stanley was a member of the United Methodist Church, Clay Kiser American Legion Post #92 and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He served on the Redfield School Board from 1959-1979. Stanley spent many winters in Arizona, playing golf and not missing the winters in South Dakota.
Stanley is survived by his seven children: Kevin (Dar) of Cavour, SD; Janet of Mesa, AZ; Kerry (Dawn) of Redfield; James of Frankfort; Dennis (Kathy) of Brentford; Steven (Judy) of Frankfort; and Robert (Susan) of Chandler, AZ; six grandchildren: Jennifer (Donny) Joyce of Fargo, ND; Emily Baird and her daughter Keira of Aberdeen, SD; Eric Baird of Redfield; Starla Baird of Mankato, MN; Tanner Baird of Aberdeen; and Mason Baird of Chandler, AZ. He is also survived by two brothers: John (Marge) of Ashville, NC; and Berwyn of Frankfort; and four sisters: Dona Baird of Chico, CA; and Jan Meile of Hartford, SD; Judy (George) Hurst of Sioux Falls, SD; and Paula (Dave) Lorenz of West Chester, PA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and both wives.
