Obituary

Timothy "Tim" Dale Van Vleet, 66, of Redfield, SD, passed away at home on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Following Tim's wishes, he has been cremated and a private family service will take place on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.  Following the family service, a gathering/happy hour will take place starting at 4:30 p.m. at Roosters Bar in Redfield.  Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield has been entrusted with arrangements (www.hykefuneralhome.com).

Tim was born July 1, 1959, in Redfield, to Clifford and Marilyn (Galvin) Van Vleet, the 4th of 6 boys.  His Mom said Tim always gave her the most heartburn, both before and after birth.  Tim grew up on the family farm southeast of Redfield and did what farm kids did back then, picking rocks, farm work, riding motorcycles and snowmobiles, baseball with neighbor kids, fishing, camping, etc.  He graduated from Redfield High School in 1977.  He also played softball for a few years.

Tim had various jobs around Redfield, working at the Cenex station when it was across from the high school, always keeping his bosses on their toes.  He also joined the Hofer combine Crew from Doland, SD, for a summer (or two?).  He spent several years in the San Diego and Los Angeles, CA area doing HVAC work and enjoying the California lifestyle and weather.  He returned to South Dakota and worked for a short time at SDDC in Redfield and helped during harvest a few times before 'retiring' due to health issues.

Tim liked to watch NASCAR, CNN, MSNBC, and wasn't much of a FOX News kind of guy.  He was a local favorite at Roosters Bar in Redfield, earning the nickname 'Mooner' as he enjoyed Blue Moon.  He liked having a cat in his retirement; his favorite one was named Puppy, typical Tim.  He lived his life to the beat of his own drum with a dry and sometimes cynical sense of humor.

Tim is survived by his brothers:  Gary Van Vleet of Redfield, Rick (Patricia) Van Vleet of Huron, SD, Kurt Van Vleet of Redfield, and Greg (Darla) Van Vleet of Bismarck, ND; Uncle Charles (Marge) Van Vleet of Rapid City, SD; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; as well as his local bar patrons and favorite bartender Brandi.

Tim was preceded in death by his father in 2010, sister-in-law Linda in 2017, brother Steve in 2021, and mother in 2023.

Please consider a donation to the Spink County EMS Center (PO Box 420, Redfield, SD, 57469), your local Hospice services, or your local Humane Society, and raise a Blue Moon in honor of Mooner.
