Obituary

W. L. "Doc" McMahan, 95, of Redfield, SD, died Monday, February 16, 2015 at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. His funeral will be Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at First Congregational UCC Church in Redfield. Reverend Tim Fugman will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. www.thelenfuneralhome.com

Willard Lyle "Doc" McMahan was born December 30, 1919, in Clay Center, KS to Irl and Anna (Wilson) McMahan. At an early age, the family moved to Shawnee County near Topeka, KS. He graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1937. Doc attended Sterling College, in Kansas, for two years and Kansas State College and graduated with a degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1943. Doc married Betty Selvog in 1944. Doc worked as a veterinarian for a few years in Worthington, MN and Clarinda, IA. In 1946, he moved to Redfield and started his veterinary service. Doc married Nancy Walker in 1957, in Aberdeen, SD. In 1994, Doc retired after 50 years of practicing Veterinary medicine.

Doc enjoyed his many years of serving farmers and ranchers in the Redfield and surrounding area. He volunteered at the Redfield VFW, helping with chicken feeds, banquets and special occasions. He enjoyed playing cards, traveling and going to the lake. Doc thoroughly loved having his family close by and especially looked forward to visits from his grandkids and great grandkids.

Doc is survived by his seven children: James (Elena) McMahan of San Marcos, TX; Didi (Bill) Blagg of Brownwood, TX; Carol (Tom) Leinen of Redfield; David (Bev) McMahan of Redfield; Shari (Clyde) Harr of Zell; Kathi (Bryon) Anderson of Redfield and Gary (Teresa) McMahan of Moyock, NC. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, his brother Howard (Myrtle) McMahan of Ft. Worth, TX; and his brother-in-law Don (Nancy) Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy in 2009 and his siblings: Owen McMahan, Anita Schultz, Eunice Dannefer and Wilson McMahan.
