Walter was born on July 8, 1914 at the home of Scott and Alma Morris west of Rockham. He grew up on the farm with primary responsibility to train saddle horses and graduated from Rockham High School. After high school he worked for a period in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC's) in the Black Hills.

After his legs were burned badly in a tractor fire, he went through a period of rehabilitation during which he was told he would never walk again. He overcame this injury to spend a very active life raising cattle, working on highway construction, working on the construction of two of the dams on the Missouri River, helping to manage a grain elevator, managing a cattle feed yard, and finally working well beyond retirement age as part of a crew that processed flax straw for the Kimberly Clark company.

Walter was married first to Myra Wilson of Redfield and later to Edie Wilson of Walhalla, ND.

He is survived by his son, Scott and daughter-in-law Doris, granddaughters Rebecca Roush and Ruth McCoy, great-grandchildren Dante and Peyton Roush, and step-granddaughters Malia Lee and Melanie Maiden. Walter is also survived by nieces Joyce Sanger and Doris Sluneka, nephews Morris & Larrie Heinzen and many great nieces and nephews. Most of the younger members of the family will always remember him as Gramps.
