He attended a country school and graduated from Tulare High School in 1961. Following graduation, he served in the Army National Guard out of Redfield from 1964 to 1970. During this time, he had the opportunity to travel in the US. Barry was united in marriage to Susan Erickson, on June 20, 1970, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, rural Tulare. To this union, a daughter was born in 1972, Shauna, whom Barry dearly loved.
Barry grew up on the family farm west of Tulare, worked for South Dakota Wheat Growers, owned and operated Sires Trucking, hauled local livestock and grain from 1969-2008, owned the Standard Oil Amoco distributorship from 1976-1986, and owned/operated Tulare Recreation “Pool Hall” from 1997-present. Barry was the Tulare Fire Chief in the 70’s and a 55-year member of the Tulare American Legion Post #292.
Barry loved the outdoors and made sure to introduce his daughter to his love of camping, fishing, pheasant and deer hunting, and exploring the Black Hills. When he had grandkids to spoil, he was in his glory to share all the same with them. Many weekends of his younger years were spent with his wife, daughter, and friends at the Missouri River or antelope and deer hunting in West River, SD. Barry loved to have fun and rarely sat still, always looking for the next adventure to put a smile on our faces and priceless memories in our hearts.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Susan of 51 years; child Shauna (Richard) Woodward of Tulare; grandchildren: Shelby (Matthew) Myers of Highmore, SD; Caitlin, and Jesse Woodward, of Tulare; sisters: Karen Sires of New Albin, IA; and Lanette (Jim) Herrmann of Holmen, WI; nephew Dustin Herrmann of Holmen, WI; nieces: Errin (Brad) Wilker of Castalia, IA; Heather Lenz of New Albin, IA; and Stephanie (Chris) Ahles of New Albin, IA; and numerous great-nephews and nieces.
