His naval career began with his assignment to the USS Kretschmar based out of Key West, FL.

In 1977, while in Boston for a ship overhaul, Dennis met his life partner, Kathleen Sheehan.  Dennis and Kathy were married in San Diego, CA, on November 10, 1979.  They spent the next 15 years stationed in San Diego, CA, Charleston, SC, Virginia Beach, VA, Okinawa, Japan and Stafford, VA.  From 1988 to 1992, Dennis was an instructor at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, VA where he taught naval tactics to Marines.
