Emma "Ferne" (Collins) Lindskov, 103, of Doland, SD passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 5, 2020, at Avantara Redfield in Redfield, SD.  Ferne’s wish was to be cremated and her memorial service is being planned for June of 2021.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield. (www.hykefuneralhome.com).

Emma Ferne Collins was born to Claude and Minnie (Hennings) Collins on March 7, 1917, in Dallas, SD where she grew up on her father’s ranch in badlands country.  She attended Black Pipe School and rode her horse to school.  She attended Belvidere High School.  She played basketball, earning four stripes and a captain’s star which she wore on her high school sweater.  She attended South Normal School in Springfield, SD and graduated with a teaching certificate.

Her first teaching assignment was in Kadoka, SD.  Later, she moved to the Doland, SD area where she met her husband Noel while teaching at Lawrence Country School.  They were married on April 2, 1937 in Kadoka and went to live on Noel’s family farm near Doland where they raised eight children.  She was a seamstress, sewing her daughter’s clothes for several years.  Ferne taught her daughters to sew and made sure her sons knew how to cook for themselves.  Having been a teacher, she was a great helper when it came time for her children’s homework. Ferne was a quiet, humble, loving, strong and independent woman. After the death of her husband and with most of her family grown, Ferne decided to move into Doland in 1971.  She later moved to Lakeside Assisted Living in Redfield, SD and as her health deteriorated, she eventually moved to Avantara Redfield nursing home.

Ferne was active as an election worker for several years.  She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Doland.  She enjoyed being a Sunday School teacher at her local church.  As an active member of UMW, she was always willing to assist as needed.  She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge 75 in which she held various offices.  She was also an active member of the Doland American Legion Auxiliary Unit #69.

Ferne loved to play card games with family and friends.  She enjoyed bowling and was a league member.  She was an avid watcher of baseball and football on TV.  She liked to attend high school basketball games.  Her hobbies were reading, knitting, and crocheting and then giving these items to her family, friends, and community raffles. Traveling, especially with her sister, was a favorite pastime. Ferne visited 48 states.  However, her favorite traveling was to see her grandchildren.  She loved the uniqueness of each one and was delighted whenever she could hold them in her arms.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children:  Charlotte Johnson of Greenville, MI; Beverly Stanford of Sioux Falls, SD; Nancy (Lester) Bloem of Milbank, SD; Johnny Lindskov of Doland; Cheryl (Mark) Meier of Sioux Falls; and son-in-law Dale Hinkle of Cavalier, ND.  She is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband Noel Lindskov; son Donald (Candice) Lindskov; two daughters:  Patricia Hinkle and Linda Lindskov; sons-in-law:  Ronald Johnson and Jerry Stanford; daughter-in-law Gloria Lindskov;  two grandchildren:  Noel Hinkle and Christen Lindskov; brother Glen Collins; and sister Leila Dithmer.
