She attended Black Pipe School and rode her horse to school. She attended Belvidere High School. She played basketball, earning four stripes and a captain’s star which she wore on her high school sweater. She attended South Normal School in Springfield, SD and graduated with a teaching certificate.
Her first teaching assignment was in Kadoka, SD. Later, she moved to the Doland, SD area where she met her husband Noel while teaching at Lawrence Country School. They were married on April 2, 1937 in Kadoka and went to live on Noel’s family farm near Doland where they raised eight children. She was a seamstress, sewing her daughter’s clothes for several years. Ferne taught her daughters to sew and made sure her sons knew how to cook for themselves. Having been a teacher, she was a great helper when it came time for her children’s homework. Ferne was a quiet, humble, loving, strong and independent woman. After the death of her husband and with most of her family grown, Ferne decided to move into Doland in 1971. She later moved to Lakeside Assisted Living in Redfield, SD and as her health deteriorated, she eventually moved to Avantara Redfield nursing home.

Ferne loved to play card games with family and friends. She enjoyed bowling and was a league member. She was an avid watcher of baseball and football on TV. She liked to attend high school basketball games. Her hobbies were reading, knitting, and crocheting and then giving these items to her family, friends, and community raffles. Traveling, especially with her sister, was a favorite pastime. Ferne visited 48 states. However, her favorite traveling was to see her grandchildren. She loved the uniqueness of each one and was delighted whenever she could hold them in her arms.
