James Peter Holmquist, age 61, of Redfield, SD passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2020. A memorial service will be held at the Redfield Wesleyan Church, 38519 174th Street, on Sunday, July 5 at 2:30 p.m.
Jim was born October 13, 1958 in Havre, Montana to Burton and Mariam Holmquist. He was the sixth of seven children and lived with his family on his grandfather Edward Newhall's wheat ranch near Loma until the fall of 1963 when they moved to Tulare, South Dakota. He attended Tulare Elementary School and graduated from Tulare High School in 1977. After a year at Montana Institute of the Bible near Billings, Jim completed a semester at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas.
A health crisis halted Jim's education. He resided for many years in Aberdeen, SD. Then he moved in with his elderly mother, Mariam Holmquist of Redfield, to provide companionship and assistance. Together they volunteered at the Good Samaritan Center, where Jim continued to serve after her death in 2014. Jim will always be remembered for the loving care and kindness he gave his mother.
In his youth, Jim earned the nickname "Jolly Jim" because he always had a smile, laughed easily and was very witty. He loved animals and raised Bantam chickens. In later years he spent great amounts of time walking in the great out of doors, and he enjoyed a regular game of dominoes.
Jim is survived by four of his siblings: Mary (Gary) Stutte of St. Louis, MO, Ruth (Dale) Waterman of Wheaton, IL, Margaret (Darch) Clampitt of Chicago, IL, and John (Deanna) Holmquist of Doland, SD; his sister-in-law: Elaine Holmquist of Kalispell, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews. He has been preceded in death by his parents Burton and Mariam Holmquist, brother Ralph Holmquist and sister Jane Fernandez.
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs." I Corinthians 13:1
