Juanita Gale Sanger, 88, of Redfield, SD passed away Saturday, November 7, 2020, at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield. Juanita and her twin sister, Bonita, were born on July 9,1932, to Lewis and Wylla (Fogelson) Larson. The twins often stayed with their Grandma and Grandpa Fogelson and Aunt Mora Fogelson on the farm near Frankfort, SD when Wylla became a single parent and needed the help and support of family. During their childhood, the family also lived in Watertown, SD for several years before returning to Redfield.
After her graduation from Redfield High School, Juanita attended Northern State College to obtain a teaching degree. She and Duane Sanger were married December 26, 1951, in the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Redfield. During their honeymoon, their car (containing their honeymoon luggage) was broken into and robbed. The couple settled on a farm near Zell, SD and later moved into Redfield.
Juanita started her professional life as a teacher in country school in Spink County. She worked at the Redfield Press for many years and was a member of the South Dakota Professional Press Women. She then bought Flolo’s Studio, a gift store and photo studio on Main Street. After that, Juanita worked in the business office at the South Dakota Developmental Center. In 1983, she graduated from Northern State with her Bachelor’s Degree and returned to the Developmental Center as a Social Worker. But the vocation she loved the most did not come with a paycheck, but from helping children in the first grade learn to read in Mrs. Carla Olson’s classroom.
Juanita was a member of the First Congregational UCC and active in Women’s Fellowship, Circle, church choir and Trustee. She was a fantastic cook and well known for her baking skills. Everyone always enjoyed her Christmas treats!
Juanita is survived by her husband, Duane, now residing in the Eastern Star Assisted Living, and children: Dane (Deb) of Redfield; Lisa (Gregg) Albright of Louisville, CO; and Linae also of Louisville; one grandson, Joshua of Redfield; one granddaughter, Sarah, of Brookings, SD; a very special cousin, Diane Struver of New York, NY; brother and sister-in-law Daelyn and Joyce Sanger of Rockham, SD and six nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, and her beloved twin sister Bonnie Veal.
A family memorial service will take place in the future as conditions permit. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield. (www.hykefuneralhome.com)
