Mary Denise Claeyssens was born on September 22, 1928, in St. Kruis, Brugge, Belgium to Richard and Marguerite (Huys) Claeyssens. She attended school in Belgium and witnessed the ravages of war. This created a toughness and perseverance which followed Mary all the days of her life. She emigrated to the United States in 1958 not able to speak English. The sacrifices she made led her future family to a better life.
On June 12, 1959, Mary was united in marriage to Cyriel Claeys in Pierre, SD. They farmed and lived in the Frederick, SD area for many years before she moved to Redfield, SD in 2006 to be closer to family. Mary also worked as a CNA at the Ellendale Nursing Center in Ellendale, ND for 25 years where she dedicated herself to caring for the residents.
Mary enjoyed traveling and did so extensively throughout Europe and the United States. She enjoyed visiting and was often at the Senior Center or Leo’s Good Food in Redfield having coffee with family or friends. She was always willing to help people, whatever the need. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and cherished all the special memories.
Grateful for sharing her life are her children: Ronald (Cyndi) Claeys of Brookings, SD; Arnold (Kris) Claeys of Huron, SD; and Caroline (Steve) Masat of Redfield; and step-children: Betty (Victor) Tabbert of Elkhorn, NE; Elmer (Mary) Claeys of Cordova, TN; and Donald (Ruth) Claeys of Firestone, CO. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, nine-step grandchildren; nineteen-step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cyriel, in 1980; step-child Robert Claeys and his wife Mary; one stepgrandson Raymond Tabbert; one step great-grandchild Rael Lazaro, one brother Leopold (Paul) Claeyssens, and four sisters: Mary Louise Weefaert; Monique Cacelle Flaminck; Jacqueline DeSlypere, and Luceinne Claeyssens, all of Belgium.
