Phyllis E. Murphy was born in Grand Rapids, MI, on December 20, 1933, to Raymond and Gladys (Wallin) Murphy. Phyllis and her former spouse, Clyde Thrift Jr., had two children, Gladys and Clyde III.
Phyllis enjoyed writing poetry, scrapbooking, reading, and studying the Bible. She did quilting and sewing when her children were young. All four of her granddaughters played Barbies with doll clothes Phyllis made for Gladys when she was growing up. She enjoyed hearing Clyde sing while he played the piano and guitar. She taught herself to play the piano for her own enjoyment. In 1954, she was voted “Queen For A Day” at Carbonneau Industries in Grand Rapids, MI. She volunteered for the Dorcas Society in Michigan; worked for the SD Developmental Center as a caregiver from 1980 until her retirement. She was a lifelong member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and rests in the assurance of the second coming of Jesus.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Raymond, LeRoy, Delbert, and Paul; and sisters: Arla Murphy and Loretta Isenhoff.
She is survived by her daughter Gladys and Marlin Schmidt of Hitchcock, SD; son Clyde and Rene Thrift III of Doland, SD; granddaughters: Misty and Allen Anderson; Heather and Craig Carr; Michele and Travis Wilkie; and April Thrift; grandsons: Clyde Thrift IV; Ted Thrift and Tristen Reil; Paul Thrift and Kelli Thomas; Tyler and Jenny Thuringer; great-grandchildren: Brady, Brennen, Sheldon, Shandon, Micheal, Matthew, Ryan, Braxten, Aden, Landon, Angel, Lexi, Gracie, Tucker, Tavah, Olivia, Kamden, Braysin, Ryder; and sisters: Lorraine Alonzo and Charlene Silberman.
