Robert “Bob” John Cleberg was born at home on December 15, 1946, to Frances and Isabelle (Esser) Cleberg. He was delivered by his father and sister, Irita, while ten siblings patiently waited his arrival. Bobby began his education at Sharp Country School and graduated from Redfield High School in 1964. In the eighth grade, Bob found his passion, boxing. He won the SD State Championship in 1964 and 1965. He then won the SD Golden Gloves in 1965. He went onto coach boxing for several years.
Bob attended Northern State College when he joined the Army fully knowing that he would be drafted. He served in the Vietnam War from 1967 – 1969 and was awarded the Purple Heart medal. The love letters from Linda kept him going for a safe return. Upon his arrival back in the United States, he proposed to the love of his life, Linda Marie Ogan and on July 5, 1969, they were united in marriage at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Redfield. They were married for 51 years. With this union came their first child Jason Robert (Jay Bob) born on January 20, 1973. On April 15, 1976, Shannon Elizabeth (Greta Belle) was born to this union. In 2004, Bob and Linda received a very special phone call that would add another son to their family, Jay Thomas Stenslie. The family was grateful that Jay was able to find his father. Bob absolutely loved everybody but most importantly his family. He gave all his grandchildren a unique nickname that stuck. He also treasured his card playing buddies at Chrystals and Hypes. “B.O.” was dearly loved by his kids’ friends as he was the life of the party.
Bob and Linda worked side by side their entire lives whether it was in the field or in the elevator.
He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and VFW.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Linda, of Redfield; his son, Jay (Vickie) Stenslie of Maple Grove, MN and their children Nick, Evan, and Lauren; their son, Jason (Shawn) Cleberg of Aberdeen, SD and their children Allie and Carson; and their daughter Shannon Thomas and her children Jakob, Caleb and Elijah. He is also survived by his sisters: Irita, Bonnie, Ardis, Mary Lou and Madonna; brothers: Mark, Joe, and Tony; and a brother-in-law Jerry Ogan of Pierre, SD. Bob is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents Isabelle and Frances; brothers: Christian Carl, Leon, Clyde, Raymond, and Pat; and sister Germaine; his mother-in-law Betty and father-in-law Kip.
