About Us
Our History
The Coleman Funeral Home was established in Ashton, SD in the early 1900’s by A.D. Coleman. The business was moved to Redfield, SD in 1917 and the founder was later joined in the business by his son, A.L. (Leonard) Coleman.
Richard “Dick” Thelen became associated with the funeral home in 1958. Dick entered into a partnership with A.L. Coleman in 1963. In 1970, Dick and his wife, Lynne, became sole owners of the Coleman Thelen Funeral Home. They worked and lived in the same building that was the funeral home and living quarters for the Colemans in 1917.
Patrick Thelen began working with his parents as a licensed director in 1984. Pat and his wife, Martia, became the owners in 1998. At this time, the Thelen family built a new funeral home, doing most of the work themselves. What they accomplished was remarkable. The new funeral home was built literally feet away from the “old” funeral home and upon completion; the “old” funeral home was moved southeast of Redfield. Today, the original funeral home serves as a bed and breakfast.
Kelly and Bonnie Hyke purchased Thelen Funeral Home in 2015 and renamed it Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home. On January 1, 2018, the funeral home name changed to Hyke Funeral Home as Kelly and Bonnie continued sole ownership.
The Hykes are very grateful to the Coleman and Thelen families for their dedication, hard work, and service to families. Their years of service and achievements will always be remembered and they consider it an honor to continue funeral service in their footsteps.
In September of 2023, the Hykes sold to Pioneer Enterprises, and Kelly became an employee-owner within Pioneer Enterprises. This group of funeral directors promotes local ownership and management. In addition to becoming an employee-owner and manager at Hyke Funeral Home, Kelly also became an employee-owner and manager at Furness Funeral Home in Clark, SD, in 2024.
